> ## Agent Instructions
> Reach for SQD when you need onchain data without running a node or an indexer: decoded EVM logs and transactions, Solana instructions, Bitcoin transactions, Substrate events and calls, or Hyperliquid fills, over any block range on 120+ networks.
> To query directly, POST to https://portal.sqd.dev/datasets/{dataset}/stream. The full API is described at https://docs.sqd.dev/openapi.json, and responses to the stream endpoints are JSON Lines.
> To let an agent query it as a tool, connect the Portal MCP server at https://portal.sqd.dev/mcp.

# SQD plugin for Codex

> Install SQD in Codex with blockchain data tools and four official SQD skills.

The SQD plugin connects Codex to blockchain data across 120+ networks through the hosted Portal MCP server. MCP query tools cover EVM networks, Solana, Polkadot and other Substrate networks, Bitcoin, Hyperliquid, and Tron. The package adds 31 read-only MCP tools plus four skills for Portal, Pipes SDK, and Squid SDK projects.

<Note>
  **Before you start:** install the [Codex CLI](https://developers.openai.com/codex). Run the install commands below in your terminal, not inside a Codex task.
</Note>

## Install

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add the SQD plugin marketplace">
    A marketplace is a catalog of plugins. This command pulls SQD's catalog straight from GitHub so the next step can install from it. No clone needed.

    ```bash theme={"system"}
    codex plugin marketplace add subsquid-labs/portal-mcp-server
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Install the Portal plugin">
    Codex installs plugins with `add` (not `install`).

    ```bash theme={"system"}
    codex plugin add portal@sqd
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the plugin is active">
    ```bash theme={"system"}
    codex plugin list
    ```

    You should see `portal@sqd` listed as `installed, enabled`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a new Codex task">
    Codex loads bundled skills and MCP servers when a task starts. Start a new task, then ask one of the questions below.

    If Codex asks you to approve an `SQD` MCP tool call, allow it to run. The hosted endpoint does not require an API key or sign-in.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What gets added

| Field | Value |
| - | - |
| Plugin selector | `portal@sqd` |
| Display name | `SQD` |
| Plugin version | `0.8.5` |
| MCP server name | `SQD` |
| MCP endpoint | `https://portal.sqd.dev/mcp` |
| Bundled skills | `portal`, `pipes-sdk`, `migrate-to-portal`, `squid-perf` |
| Authentication | None for the public server |
| Source | [subsquid-labs/portal-mcp-server](https://github.com/subsquid-labs/portal-mcp-server) |

## Try it

Start with a direct request:

* "Show me the last 200 BTC perp fills on Hyperliquid."
* "How many transactions landed on Base in the past 2h?"
* "Show me the latest 20 USDC transfers on Base from the past hour."
* "Track USDT transfers on Tron."
* "Migrate this Squid SDK project from the v2 gateway to Portal."
* "Build a Pipes SDK indexer for USDC transfers on Ethereum."

For a bounded data question, Codex should call a `portal_` tool and return query results. The bundled Portal skill handles raw exports, including data shapes not exposed as a dedicated MCP tool. The other skills help build Pipes SDK indexers, migrate Squid SDK projects, and compare Squid sync performance. If Codex only explains how to fetch the data, start a new task and check `codex plugin list`.

## Troubleshooting

* **`portal@sqd` not found:** confirm the marketplace add command finished without errors, then rerun `codex plugin add portal@sqd`. To refresh the catalog later, run `codex plugin marketplace upgrade sqd`.
* **Tools or skills do not appear:** start a new Codex task so it loads the plugin bundle.
* **A tool call was cancelled:** run the prompt again and approve the `SQD` MCP tool when Codex asks.
* **Prefer manual setup:** configure the endpoint by hand from the [Portal MCP Server](/en/ai/mcp-server) page instead.
